Ratargul Swamp Forest is a freshwater swamp forest located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is the only swamp forest located in Bangladesh and one of the few freshwater swamp forests in the world. The forest is naturally conserved under the Department of Forestry, Govt. of Bangladesh.

The only acknowledged swamp forests in the country is located in the Gowainghat area of Sylhet. This place is known as ratargul swamp forest or Bengali amazon forest. ratargul swamp forest Sylhet is only 36 kilometers away from Sylhet city. Undeniably beautiful, most of the ratargul forest trees are underwater for 4 to 7 months a year.

Ratargul swamp forest covers an area of about 30,320 acres. The forest covers 504 acres of this vast area and the rest of land is filled with small ponds. There are about 20 species of water-tolerant plants in this large forest. In this swamp forest, Different species of birds appear in the rainy season, and then some wildlife also takes shelter.

There are also thousands of guest fairs sitting in the reservoir during the winter. Occasionally the tree will block the branches. The trees have to be removed by hand to create a path.

 

The naming of ratargul:

In the local language of Sylhet Murta or Patigach is known as ‘Ratagach’. The forest is named after that Murtha or rata tree.

Kayaking at ratargul:

 

You can go kayaking at ratargul. Not sure how fun it will be to ride a boat with the fun you get at kayaking. With kayak, you can go anywhere at ratargul. You can stop if you wish. Which you can’t do with a boat.

Guides per hour – 150 TK(BDT) – It’s best to take a guide for the first time. Otherwise, you can lose the way.

 

How to go ratargul swamp forest-Sylhet:

 

You can Ratargul in several ways. But anyway, you have to go from Sylhet.

Then from Sylhet city, you can go ratargul in three different ways those are:

 Way one: 

From Sylhet to Jaflong -By  Tamabil Road, reach saraighat directly to Goainghat. Then from Goinaghgat to ratargul bit office, you have to hire a traler, the fare is between 900 tk to 1500 tk (departing) and it takes two hours. After taking the boat office, you will have to enter the forest with a dinghy boat, it will take 200 tk to 300 tk for an hour.

 

Way two:

Arriving at Goinghat with CNG from Amber Khana Point in Sylhet, the fare will be Tk 800 -1500. Osmani Airport – The road that leads to Salutikar is very beautiful during the rainy season. Then again previous way hire a traler, the fare is between 900 tk to 1500 tk (departing) and it takes two hours. After taking the boat office, you will have to enter the forest with a dinghy boat, it will take 200 tk to 300 tk for an hour.

 

Way three:

Ratargul – From Amber Khana Point in Sylhet, CNG will have to reach Motor Ghat (through Saheb Bazar), rent will be tk 200 -300. The motorboat can then go straight to the forest with a dinghy boat, which will cost Tk 200-300 per hour.

 

Where to stay in ratargul:

 

You can’t stay at ratargul cause it’s a forest, you have to come back from here and have to stay in Sylhet.There so many good hotels in Sylhet. But in occasion hotel rooms may not be available. That’s why my suggestion book before you go here.

There is no best quality hotel in ratargul but in Sylhet at the location of zindabazar famous for food hotels.

Caution on ratargul:

Be aware that snakes usually take shelter in various tree trunks after the forest is submerged in the rainy season. Apart from this, there is also the clutter of leech. If swimming is not known, carry a life jacket. Take an umbrella and raincoat if needed.
